Villa Balear, the rebirth of a structure on the Costa Brava
In Calonge, in the very heart of the Costa Brava, Villa Balear emerges as an example of how contemporary architecture transforms the unfinished into a living work. The project begins with a concrete structure abandoned for more than fifteen years, which the team decided to reclaim by reinterpreting it under current regulations and adapting it to an ambitious program focused on comfort and leisure. The house is organized over three levels that interact with both the terrain and the sea. The lower level houses a garage, bedroom, multipurpose room, machine room, and a spa area with sauna and hydromassage, open toward the pool—conceived as the center for leisure and celebration.
The pool is the scenic heart of the project, featuring an integrated jacuzzi, central fire zone, and barbecue area designed for social gathering. A unique gesture elevates the architecture of water: a second pool on the first floor that cascades over a pedestrian walkway, creating a visual and acoustic spectacle. On the ground floor, the Italian-designed kitchen and the living-dining area extend onto a terrace that opens toward the pool, while two en-suite bedrooms offer privacy and comfort. The first floor concentrates the most exclusive spaces, with an additional bedroom and the master suite featuring a walk-in closet, semi-open bathroom, and access to an upper terrace with jacuzzi and barbecue area, conceived as a privileged viewpoint over the Costa Brava.
Villa Balear embraces pure volumes, the prominence of glass, and the nobility of materials such as exposed concrete, stone cladding, metal elements, and wood. The interiors reinforce this atmosphere with continuous flooring, designer furniture, and a balanced palette of neutral and mineral tones. The result is a home that goes beyond domestic function: a stage for contemporary living where water, light, and landscape take center stage, transforming an abandoned structure into a house that celebrates togetherness, relaxation, and everyday spectacle.
